You would go through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. You might go through others dependent on where you started in Texas and/or where you are going in California. But in general you would travel either I-10 in south Texas or I-40 in north Texas.

Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. In Texas take the Highway 10 West all the way to L.A. Be sure to keep your gas tank full at every stop after you leave Texas. There are long stretches in Arizona and New Mexico where you might not be able to buy gasoline for a while.
