Writing poetry is a skill, one of the hardest skills to acquire in the writing world. Just as a great artist has rules to follow, so does the poet. As for being futile, the study of poetry enables us to better understand what poetry actually is, and what makes it different from an essay or a paragraph, or even a short story or novel. Song lyrics are easier to read, due to the nature of the poetry used to make them. They use fairly strict meter, use endword rhyming and sound pleasant when sang or read. I hope this is what you needed to know.

The study of poetry is NOT futile...in fact, the more you study the more you realize what an art it truly is when done well. Which leads into the next line, it is both a skill and an art. Why? because you can refine your skill, but in the end it takes talent to write something that truly touches someone deeply or conveys more than the sum of the definition of the words used. Artists use paint, anyone can move a brush and most can be taught to recreate an image that is recognizable...but that is a far cry from calling that person an "artist"...the same applies to poetry. One person can say, "birds don't cry, they can only sing when they're sad and that makes people who hear them sad too" and another can say, "birds don't cry, they sing sweet songs of sadness in ways which make the angels weep and cause the winds to sigh"...big difference.

If song lyrics are the most relatable "Poetry" to teenagers, it's probably because it's the closest most of them ever get to poetry other than what's forced on them in school. Let's face it, few guys think poetry is "manly" when they're a teenager, but most can relate to "Rapp" or other song lyrics because it's "cool" to listen to music. In fact, most music lyrics are junk and without the tune would sound pretty silly...whereas the poetry that has survived the test of time is usually deep and moving, showing an understanding of not only the power of words, but the power of thought when expressed in a thoughtful way. "I could write a thousand words and never say a thing, or bleed a few well written lines and forever change the world"...that's the power of poetry.

I LOVE POETRY!!
Writing poetry is a skill and it is like song lyrics and most teenagers relate to this. A form of music is poetry just with a beat and singing.
My opinion of poetry is that it's awesome. By writing peotry I can express myself much better than I would just saying how I feel.
