It's fine. As a given name I'd consider going for Nathan. Or even Jonathan or Nathaniel. The kid would have loads of nicknames to choose from like Nathan, Nate or Jonah. People will like the name or they won't, you can't please everyone. Nate as a nickname for any of the names I suggested or even on its own is fine. Much better than some of the 'unique' names people are so fond of these days.

I do like the name Nate. My father in law's name is Nathan but everyone calls him Nate. He's a very successful president of a company, so when I hear the name, I think success.

Yeah, I'm a good daughter-in-law!

I think liking a name sort of depends on if you've known a person with that name before and whether or not you liked that person. If I knew someone who had that name Nate and was extremely annoying, I probably would have an aversion to the name Nate.
But, all the Nate's I've known have been nice, so yes, I like the name Nate.

I have always loved the name Nate. It is used often in cowboy novels and in Mills and Boon novels that are set in the country. To me Nate is a strong, masculine, manly name. It conjures up images of horses and ruggedness and family traditions.

A name is only that. A name.
The person behind that name can make it famous, or infamous.

Listen to the Johnny Cash song.

"A boy named Sue."

Nate is fine.

My son's name is Steel. I'm a welder and thought that would be a good manly name.

He likes to play piano.

Go figure.

But in the end, I think piano players get more lucky with the
opposite sex than welders.

If it's for yourself - as in shortened version of Nathan then it's okay. But if you, Nathan, are intending to call your son Nate then it's going to be confusing!
