A few years ago I remember seeing a Colorado Avalanche that was in a desperate need of a starting goalie with Patrick Roy about to hang up his skates. The guy who answered the call was his aspiring understudy,a young Swiss goalie. Davis Aebischer was a tremendous goalie in his seasons with Colorado as a starter and he was even better in the playoffs. I am seriously sad to see him in the minor leagues after 2 short stints with Montreal and the Pheonix Coyotes. I feel he is being treated with no respect from the teams in the league, he could start as the primary goalie for half of the NHL squads out there. I have been a huge New Jersey Devils fan since the Red, White and Green jerseys and have played hockey for years. This is just a bad case of a horrible GM (Pierre Lacroix) and his bad choices in trades and releasing of players. Well congrats to the Avalanche for becoming a high buget mediocre team of poorly lead individuals.

Hey now, the Avs are NOT a high budget team (17th in the NHL in payroll), and they are NOT in any way a mediocre team (8-4, #1 in the NW). And no way in hell are they a team of poorly led individuals (Sakic, Smyth, those are good leaders)!!! Those are completely baseless statements. So what if the Devils suck this year? Don't take it out by dissing the Avs.
About Aebischer, I did like him, I do think he hasn't been given a chance. I mean come on, one game and to the minors??? Give the guy at least another game! He's really gotten the short end of the stick in recent years.

At the end of last year, Aebischer was the 3rd goalie in Montreal behind Huet, and Halak. And with the emergence of Carey Price, there really was no room for an over-paid, underachieving Aebischer.
In Phoenix, Tellqvist and Auld are both younger, and they still have hope for David LeNeveu as a potential future starter. Aebischer was waived, no takers, and now gets to enjoy life as a high paid AHLer (those damn one way contracts!)

He got a fair shake in Montreal last year. Played some decent games early, after Huet went down to injury he was brutal. No rebound control and looked lost on the net. Habs stuck with him for too long before finally going to Halak from the farm.
Huet's injury was a golden opportunity to showcase himself as a UFa and he blew it. Lets be honest when the only team showing interest in you is the Coyotes, you have fallen a long ways on the depth charts.
Hey, at least he got Theodore's salary off our books.

Aebischer was certainly good during his days in Colorado, just as Jose Theodore was certainly good when he started with Montreal. Do I know what happened to Theodore, no, except he couldn't keep his starting position over Budaj, which is pretty much exactly what happened to Aebischer. And let's be clear, Budaj isn't (yet) anywhere near where Theodore was when he won the Vezina Trophy, which means neither is Theodore now. And sadly, Aebischer now isn't the Aebischer you remember.

Just maybe, his game went further south than Phoenix. If Colorado didn't want him, and Montreal didn't want him, and Phoenix couldn't use him, he might be in the right place?
