If you are having sex out of wedlock, then you aren't being very careful. As you know, birth control is never 100% effective.
Since you are so worried, consider abstinence as a mature and responsible choice.
To answer your question, most women can take a test around the time they expect their period and get an accurate result.

She can take a home pregnancy test now. She should follow the directions and use her first urine of the morning to help ensure there will be a highly concentrated amount of the pregnancy hormone to be detected by the test (if she is pregnant).
If she tests negative, she could still be pregnant and the hormone just wasn't enough to be detected, so she should retest in another few days or a week if her period still doesn't come. If she keeps missing the period and tests negative, she should see a doctor for a blood test, which is more accurate.

I took a pregnancy test the day after I missed my period, and it came back negative. I took another almost three weeks later and it came out positive. If she is late more than one week, have her take a pregnancy test. If that is positive, she should go to her MD and get some blood work done.

A pregnancy test can be done as soon as you realize your period is late/missed. I think your g/f should take a pregnancy test.

You can take the test, the day after the miss period
Take it in the morning with the first pee of the day
In early pregnancy, it's the best for not getting a false negative
