What type of coloring do you have?
If you have blonde hair, then usually blues, greens, oranges, and orangey-pinks (like coral pink) look good. Usually warm colors look good on blondes.
If you have dark hair, then deep reds, purples, and blues look good. Cool colors usually look good on brunettes.
If you have red hair, then greens, reds, and purples look good because they complement the red hair.
Of course, these are not you only options. They are just some suggestions to get you started. Have fun with it!

I was the same way at your age...I'm 23 and I still love black and dark colored clothing. It really is good for giving you a more mature look and slimming you down. And my mother made some of the same complaints. So I know where you're coming from ^_^
In my opinion, if you want to wear black, wear black....You know what looks good on you. And if you don't feel comfortable in what you're wearing, what's the point of wearing it...Personally, I've expanded my color schemes to include browns and blues and greens, and even tans, but I HATE orange and pink, and I've only owned 2-3 yellow shirts that I recall- because I've never felt comfortable in them
If anything, you can go and try on a variety of colors. Browns and blues are good ones to start with. Especially the darkish cerulean clothing you see in stores now. They are vibrant, but they are not "LOOK AT ME" vibrant ^_^. From there, you can move on to other colors and see how they work for you and how you like them.
But if you still don't feel comfortable in them, then stick with the black. Black always works ^-^

Wear whatever color you like. I often only wear black, white and gray but am currently wearing a purple dress and have gotten compliments that color looks good. It doesn't really matter what you wear it's how you wear it. Very cliche, but very true. If you feel good your confidence will be visible to everyone around you.

Try wearing dark colors other than black (Mom might think you're going Goth!). Navy is just as slimming, so is dark green, brown or deep cranberry.

don't do vibrant colors right away if you want to change. work your way up. if you can't just switch use bright accesories. like brighter jeans shoes purses ect.
