MLB has a rule that states that other than the umpires, nobody can be on the field during the game who isn't wearing a uniform.

Joe Macarty of the New York Yankees I believe was the first to start the Tradition. He was a player/manager at the time so he had to be ready to play if needed. The tradition started there

This is an excellent question that I wonder too, I mean if you look at any sports teams outside of baseball, you don't see the head coach of the team, in thier team's uniform. But I can't say if they don't look good in suits, baseball mangers (I m ean), have you have ever seen them in a suit, no because they are in a baseball uniform.

It is a rule that they have to wear them. In fact Terry Francona got warned for not wearing his official shirt when the Sox were visiting Yankee stadium for a game. The inspection and warning were done at the request of the Yankees. How bush league is that?

We're the only ones that have a necessity to go onto the field of play to conduct business. We have to deliver line-up cards, converse with umpires, talk with players and make pitching changes. Those cowardly whimps in the other sports don't have to leave the sidelines to do that!

Besides, would you want to see Pat Riley and Phil Jackson in tank tops and shorts on the bench? LOL

Honestly, does baseball really need managers? I guess they were the jerseys to feel like a part of the team. Like a high paid bat boy.
