Use prime factors:

36 = 2*2*3*3
42 = 2*3*7

You need enough of each prime to be able to form both numbers:
You need two 2's (because 36 has 2)
You need two 3's (because 36 has 2)
You need one 7 (because 42 has one)

Least common multiple =
2*2*3*3*7 = 252

252 is the smallest number that can be divided by 36 and by 42.

Largest common divisor can only contain prime common to both:
Only one 2
Only one 3
And no 7 (not found in 36)

2*3 = 6
6 is the greatest number that divides both 36 and 42.
