Without any detail at all; OR any offense; my first suggestion might seem irreverent.

Drop the pump into water; allow that it's primed; and fire it up.

It might help us to know the purpose of the pump; and your intent.

I agree. Too much information is a dangerous thing. But, not knowing if you are outside, in a basement or where might go a long way to helping.

We traditionally use sump pumps in basements around my neck of the woods. Piping is crucial. You need to elevate the water up to the drain and use a check valve so the water doesn't run back into the sump. Use some coarse material in the sump so the pump isn't always picking up dirt.

There are also some pretty good brochures at local hardware stores, ie. Home Depot and Lowe's. Good luck.
