tell them the truth but instead of yahoo answers say you thought you heard the doorbell... and ran to see who it was just in case (of ???) and ran back only to find the tub filled a bit too much and the child was having some trouble with the task of taking a bath.....
something along those lines.. just don't say yahoo answers... say busy doing too many things at once.
this is a part of life.. you must learn to pull a few things in order to work out situations.. never outright lie just leave out key points...

oooooooooooh my god. Ok. Firstly, it looks like yahoo is getting to be some kind of obsession for you?
Any way. Tell him you were making the kid a bite to eat or something and forgot and that you would be paying for the damage. because that would be the responsible thing to do.

Deny any of it being your fault. Say the power must've went out after you departed due to some technical difficulty.

Wow, tell him you passed out from not eating today and when you woke up it was too late. I know this sounds lame, but I can't think of anything else.

Have you considered telling the TRUTH? Sure, they'll be pissed at first, but they'll get over it. And you'll get more respect for being honest.
