i've seen them in decorating magazines where they grow the grass about 6 inches high and cut the tops perfectly straight. How do i go about getting one started inside my house. i live in michigan so starting it outside is out of the question right now.

Simply put the seeds in the pot and water them till they germinate. When the grass comes up nice and thick and gets to a certain height, trim the tops with a scissor.

I do this a lot for my cats. It's not really grass; what I use is wheat/barley/oat seed. You should be able to get this at any feed store. Fill the pot with good potting soil; sprinkle the seed over the top of the soil, and cover it with a bit more soil. Water it well, and keep it moist. In a few days, you'll start to see the seeds sprout, and it won't be long until you have a nice pot full of green grass.

Using grain seed for this has the added virtue that, since it's so carefully hybridized, just about all the grass plants (which is all grain actually is) will be the same height, and that will give it a nice, tidy look. Just remember, if you have cats, they WILL help themselves to the greens too :-)

Wheatgrass seed will grow fast (8-15days for an attractive amount of growth) and dense if you sow it in a little pot or pail and put it in a south facing window (at least 60degrees) or under a grow lamp. Right now, since things are cooling off, you'll get even faster results if you set the pots or flats on a heating mat. Please be careful if you use a regular heating pad that isn't specifically designed for plant use as you risk electrocution if it gets wet.

You can give the growth period a jumpstart, too, if you soak the seeds for 12hrs, then drain for 12hrs before you plant them.

Not only are the pots attractive as centerpieces (I've put them in little tin pails and positioned them, wedding cake style, on several stacked cake stands and it looked fabulous!), but after the event is over, you can juice them, snip them up and sprinkle on salad, or feed them to the cat.

Good luck!

P.S. Do be sure if you are putting them in a window that you turn the pots so that the growth stays nice and straight instead of leaning towards the light.
