Ted Williams was a legend. And he was one of, if not THE best baseball player that ever lived.

And I have his metal moxie soda pop poster!! =)
(I know that has no relevance, just thought I'd share)

The best hitter who ever lived. Ted Williams knew more about every facet of his swing and about his opponents than anyone in the game. He had one of the greatest sets of eyes ever, evidenced by his decorated service as a fighter pilot in WWII and Korea. He could tell you what pitch Virgil Trucks threw him on a 2-2 count in the ninth inning on May 18, 1957 and exactly where it broke and crossed the plate. He could tell you he had a hitch for four games in Spring Training 1946. However, he played an average left field and was pretty slow (24 SB in 19 seasons).
Was he the "best player in the entire game"? Almost definitely not. Is he an American hero? You bet. The greatest hitter who ever lived? Damn straight.

the best hitter I would go with Williams. best player would be Ruth. I read an article yrs ago when Willaims was managing the Washington Senators, that he took pine tar and covered the bat and hit 10 balls and told the reporter where exactly he hit the ball and where the pine tar would be on it...he was correct on 8 of the 10...and he was 50 yrs old at the time. I love Teddy Ballgame, but Ruth hands down was the best for his hitting, pitching and the way he became the idol of a generation.

He was a great player, but he will never take the place of Babe Ruth. While Williams will likely be remembered for being the last hitter to hit .400, the Babe is the greatest home run hitter, and he can hit for average since he has hit .342 during his career. Williams is a great player, and it sucks that he passed away in 2002, but the Babe will always be the greatest player since he can hit for both average and power, not to mention, he is much powerful hitter than Williams.

If you had stopped at 'hitter', I'd be with you. Player? Even Ted Williams acknowledged Joe Dimaggio as the best player he'd ever seen, and there have been good candidates since him who were probably even better.
Best hitter. Yes.

Agree with one of the greatest....just how much greater would he have been if he had the 5.5 yrs that he gave up to serve our country.....just at a 30 per year pace would have put him over 650!...40 per year he would have broke Ruth's record....so one could make arguement for him from the power stand point.....not a bad hitter either!...very close to agreeing that he could have been the greatest!....but Ali is still the greatest of all time!!!!....for the matter of record Aaron hit almost 4000 more times then Ruth....give Ruth those bats at his pace and Ruth would have finished with over 1100!!!

Not the best player, he was the best hitter.

The best player who ever lived was the Babe. Besides being arguably the best slugger ever, In his prime, he could run, play defense. And, he was the best lefthanded pitcher in baseball prior to becoming a full-time outfielder.

Best player? No. But he's one of the three best hitters ever.

If he hadn't given up nearly five full seasons to military service (thanks for that, Ted), we'd likely have more than enough evidence to put him in the #1 slot without dispute. Ah well.

he isnt the greatest, but he one of the greats. look at his stats, then also remember he was in the military during the prime of his career. He had triple crown contending numbers i believe 5 years, winning it 2 times probobly more if he didn't take time off of baseball.
