Because they've managed to parlay their power into a monopolistic, corrupt two-party system that doesn't allow any legitimate, decent, honorable, respectable, responsible candidates to run. The "Republicrats" have decided that it's better they share power instead of allowing a third or fourth political party erode their exclusive franchise. So, both parties instill fear, bias, hatred, prejudice, propaganda and political bigotry to keep gullible voters believing they have a real 'choice', when - in fact - national party leaders determine who will win elections long before the voters cast any ballots. -RKO- 11/01/07

i think it was fear that some other odd partie could come in to power and desrupt the stadis quo...........the south against the north had the largest to do with causing two large parties to form...........the north moved to the right and became quite republican even neo right including midwest, west and northeast and they looked down on the south as soft, backwoods , more inviroment friendly but not as pro market as the north and not as aggresive as the north.........thus i would say this brought about the left and the right of to day........power brokers v. s the inviroment or poor v. s. rich......but i think we all want whats good for all and not just whats good for me .....follow the money
