Because a lot of Virgina Techs players had their jerseys stolen in the visiting locker room. They reported that before the game started.

they had 5 jerseys supposidly taken from their locker room the night before while they were out. they are unsure if they were stolen because there were 3 doors between public access and the locker room, 1 lock, 1 camera and 1 guard.
so they ended up using GTech's 2004 visitors jerseys. They used magic markers to cross out the Yellow jackets and the russel atheletics symbols, They even had to draw on Nike sponsorship swooshes, which they mockingly drew on backwards.
