It was a brilliant comedy and satire with a lot of scenes that poked fun at various aspects of American life and the reach of this country throughout the world. One of my favorite scenes is the one where Keenan Wynn is forced to shoot the lock of a Coca Cola machine to get enough coins for a phone call to the Pentagon to stop nuclear war from happening. Says a lot about Coke's importance in the world.
Yet another is a scene of fighting between Army Airborne troops and defending Air Force personnel at Burpelson Air Base under a sign which read "Peace is our Profession".
And retired General Nate Twining of the Air Force should have sued over the portrayal of him by George C. Scott.
Believe me that the entire Air Force racheted up their Personal Reliability Program big time in the wake of this movie.
The alpha-numeric code system for the authority to use nuclear weapons in the movie was quite accurate. If you worried about national defense being in the hands of those people, that little code box replaced the old voice activitated system which was abolished during the Kennedy Adminstration. Every third-rate comic in the country was imitating JFK's accent. So, if we had stayed with using a voice code directly from the President, then Vaughn Meader could have started nuclear war by saying something like "chocolate soldier" in imitation of JFK on a military radio.

It was dark and hilarious. Some people missed the point of the movie. Maybe they were lucky?
The image of Slim Pickins riding that bomb will stay with me. Yahoo!
At the time, I wondered if this 'could really happen'. Now I'm older and have no doubt that it can.
National defense? Don't forget your president. The buck stops with him. Makes a body think.

The Defence Dept would hope a Tree Hugger would push the button on command ... has to be someone a little more off center.
And whoever wants to have the ultimate ruling over the button, he'd have no kids, grandkids nor anyone to leave behind... scarey, eh?

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Yeah I remember it. I always thought politicians were a little wacky and nothing surprises me since Watergate. To quote my friend..."Hell, if you can burp your name, you got my vote. If politicians could burp theirs, they'd get my vote too."
