The natives did not understand they European practice of allowing a surrendering enemy to withdraw. European warfare had become highly formal and allowances were made to save lives if the other side still got what they wanted. In Native warfare, the enemy was usually wiped out or absorbed into the tribe to eliminate any future threat. Magwa couldn't just let the British go, blood had been spilled and the war must be won.

Each side had good and bad relations with different native tribes.

The Huron chief was concerned that the white man's greed for more land than he could use was infecting the tribe, Magwa in particular.

My absolute favorite scene is when Magwa gets all busted up by the old guy. All through the film Magwa's been this unstoppable warrior, then this old guy easily and brutally takes him down. It was great.
