Well choosing an operating systems largely in my experience has to do with what you want to do on your computer. Are you a gamer or are you going to use your computer for business or for normal things like surfing the web and myspace. In my opinion Windows for gaming because the majority of games are for Windows, If for business then Mac. Regretfully I don't have that much experience with linux though i have heard its pretty good. EDIT: Just looked at the link and i'm guessing your a gamer so i would say Windows

You can only use an XP disk to install XP on one computer. If you try to install it on a second computer (illegally) you will not be able to validate it with Microsoft. If you uninstalled XP from the first computer Microsoft may allow you to install it after you call Microsoft using the phone number you will be given when the validation is rejected. As of January 1 Microsoft will no longer sell OEM versions of XP to computer makers. Dell will not sell a computer without an operating system. Dell no longer even sells and XP systems at Dell Outlet. Since you will need to reformat the computer to install XP it makes no difference if the hard drive is blank or has Vista pre-installed. Get Vista Home Premium and get all the disks. This way if you want to install Vista at some future date, and you will, you will have the software for free. When you format and install XP you will need to install the XP drivers for your modem; computer/motherboard; video card; sound card; network card; mouse; web cam; etc. It is likely if this is a new computer model, that there are no XP drivers available for your computer. Without the XP drivers the computer will run slow, if at all.

Formatting a hard drive means that you erase all the data from the drive. No computers works without an operating system. I think you should get Windows XP because Vista still has a lot of bugs.

Well simply put, you will need an OS. Vista is nice and new and looks great! But is still a little shaky. I would suggest XP Pro. I'm sure you can probably get a legit version online somewhere for half the price of buying it at BestBuy. Vista, XP, Windows 95.98/ME, etc. They are all Operation Systems. Without an OS, it's like buying a new car, which looks nice, and may have a CD changer, but no engine.

You need an operating system to use any computer, however you DON'T need to pay for an operating system. Ubuntu Linux is one of many free, reliable operating systems (www.ubuntu.com)
If you want to use Microsoft Windows, I advise using Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro. Windows Vista still needs some work.

Format just means that your os prepares the hard drive in a way that it can write to it. I am not a big fan of Vista, I highly recommend windows XP pro, or home. And no, it won't boot without an os, unless you get one of those Linux os cd and boot from it. Anyway, good luck.

All computers require an operating system. They will do nothing until you set up and install one.
Why pay for Winblows then all of the additional protection it requires against viruses, hacks, etc...?
Try Linux. It's free, there are almost no viruses against it and it's a lot more secure than Windows.

I would try sticking with Windows XP rather then Vista, alot of game and other software is still not compatable with Vista yet, and some of your old games or stoftware might not run if you get Vista.
I suggest the Xp
