what do i do i have a problem like this:
\5/-32
(the 5 isn't outside the square root sign)

the \ / is the square root sign.
and i read somewhere you have to use i, but she doesn't want us to. so is the answer just -2?

the answer would be 2i, but since you're teacher doesn't want you to use i then there is no answer to the problem. It's impossible to solve the problem without using i. the ans is not -2. There is no such thing as -2 like 1/0 is undefined. -2 would be undefined.

raise -32 to the power of 1/5 th.

that is,

(-32)^ (1/5) = -2 this is just like taking the fifth root of -32.

this is not omplex numbers so you can't use i.

What you are trying to depict seems to be the fifth root of - 32, one of which would be - 2. The other 4 are complex numbers, and use i.

If you cannot use i, there are only 2 possible answes. It is sqrt(5) divided by -32 or the answer does not exist.
