Must life have a purpose? If it does, it could only be to effect other life because without life, there would be no one to notice.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The meaning of life and the purpose of ones life are two different venues.

Philosophers and Theologians alike have debated the meaning of life for eons and never have decided on one definition that would /could cover every humans' existence in the universe. The only thing they could agree is that each person is here for a purpose.

Poetic explanation:
"The meaning of life" as us humans relate to it, can be seen simply as an ongoing moment in the process of realizing it is in perfect harmony with itself.

Technical explanation:
Humans (and all sentient creatures, for that matter) have a specialized "tuning mechanism" that allows them/us to perceive temporal reality at the particular level best suited to that particular form.
All of our pain and joy, love and anguish are part of our process of understanding that portion of the spectrum of life (and it is an infinite spectrum, we are but "tuned in" to a narrow band of the whole, by the way) - this experience gets absorbed into the general filed of awareness that permeates all of the manifested universe. That consciousness, the General Field if you will, is what some people refer to as "God" - it is where "we" came from, and where we will return to. No, wait, that's not true, because we've never left "it" and "it" never leaves us. We're in it, and the more we realize this fact the more comfortable we become in our skin, and less afraid of the illusions that humans are so fond of.

Considerably smarter and wiser people have stated this much better than my puny attempt here. Suffice it to say that ALL religious beliefs are simply "best guesses" at explaining the ACTUAL reality we find ourselves faced with the challenge of understanding.

Animals are both luckier and less well off than we: they don't have to grapple with the "big issues" - they just have to spend their entire waking existence finding enough food to eat and avoid becoming food for other creatures.

I believe that the meaning of life is to find your truth, a sense of belonging and realising 'yes! this is where i am meant to be, right now! there is a reason, i may not understand but i am trusting in this because this feeling is like no other, because it is when you feel a deep connection to something greater than yourself, a feeling that says, 'the impossible can be possible! i just need to believe!''

Life is so temporary it can be scary. You need to live out side the rules(just don't kill anyone and you'll be okay) To fully drink life to it's fullest, cry, laugh, love, get your heart broken, break a heart, give to the world, get scared, and don't hold back on anything at all what so ever.

The meaning of life is joy - it is constantly reaching for things that make us feel better and better, so we can expand and evolve.
We keep on changing and evolving because in this constant search for joy, we are leaving behind stuff that don't bring us joy anymore and make new stuff that bring joy, and so on and so forth. Joy is the fuel.
