I have a compaq laptop and the touchpad is not fully working. The mouse function is working, but it doesn't scroll when I drag my finger over the "scrolling grooves". what's wrong? Its getting kind of annoying since I'm used to scrolling with the grooves.

Is the touchpad turned off?

I have seen laptops before where you could actually turn off that touchpad. Maybe you accidently hit a button that turned the "slider" so you can't scroll anymore.

Also, plugging in the mouse may disable the touchpad.

I'm not sure what else to try, let us know if you solve the problem...

in the nook of your job bar there ought to be a splash image, that sounds like 3 rectangles, one enormous one, 2 little on the backside, this represents the touch pads sensitivity. touch the pad, then seem at this to confirm if there is any reaction. If no longer, there could be a lose connection. decrease than the keyboard the pad is linked to the motherboard of the computing device making use of a small ribbon-like cable. that's an rather user-friendly restoration. only reconnect this if that's the subject, and in case you have no longer have been given any clue the thank you to try this, do no longer attempt to pry up the keyboard. Take it to a expert or a tech savvy chum. wish I helped -Tyler

You need to reinstall the touchpad driver. Visit the website for your laptop; download and reinstall the driver.
