He was a seeker
Edit:
Ok I just read Rachel P's comment saying he was a chaser, but when Harry found the pensieve in Snape's office and he went to a memory of Hogwarts and saw his father he was playing with a snitch that he nicked - I just assumed that he was a seeker
And even if he was a seeker I thought Charlie Weasley was the best Gryffindor seeker? Or maybe he wasn't a seeker.......
Edit 2:
Ok he was a chaser in the books but a seeker in the movies, like Rachel P said and here is the evidence:
"He was also a player on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. In the film version of Philosopher's Stone, Harry and his friends find James' name listed on a plaque as a Seeker on his Quidditch team; however, J.K Rowling stated in an interview that he was in fact a chaser.[2] He was shown playing with a Golden Snitch outside of games and practices[HP5], ostensibly to show off, and he apparently had a habit of rumpling up his hair to suggest that he had just stepped off a broomstick"

see yes it always says he was the best seeker and harry was going to be just like his father but at some points it strays from that story and hes a chaser i guess it really depends on which story you stick to more often.....i go with seeker myself.<3 XD

He was a chaser! JK Rowling said so. And I think it was in one of the books. If you don't believe me, google James Potter + chaser. They only made him a seeker for the movies because it "fit" better.

I believe he was a chaser because it was JK who said it herself, and we cannot argue with the author. But in the movies, James was a seeker.

It is not said in the books. In the movie version of PS/SS, they have James as a Seeker, but in one of her chats, JKR says he was a Chaser.

He most definatly was a seeker. Harry had seen in the first book his father's plaque and trophy in a glass case at Hogwarts on display. It read on the plaque that he was Gryfindor's team Seeker.
