No the only people in the UK that should be allowed guns are the Police & the Military.
Any person caught with a gun.....automatic 10 years in jail.
Don't tell me about farmers and gun club enthusiacs requiring guns........if two people are murdered by guns, that's a couple of people too many.
If Gordon Brown asked if all the idots report to the police station; and if they did; then I think any person should have a gun; however would this happen?

Hello,
(ANS) If we in the UK follow the example of the USA and allow the "right to bear arms" i.e. allow every person in this country to carry a gun. Then the murder rate would explode as it has done in America.
**The moral of this story is shown by the evidence that guns make a society LESS SAFE!!
**Americans are always saying how much safer they feel here in the UK when they visit us, or come here on business or stay as students.
**Michael Moore's film "Bowling for Columbine" exposes the sheer hysteria & hypocrisy of the American mind set when it comes to guns & killing.
No! Thanks the right to bear arms is definitely NOT something I want to see here in the UK, let the US keep its madness to itself. That would be one export to far IMO.

Listen.
We in the USA are one of the few countries where it is in its constitution that the populous has a right to own guns.
With what all this entangles, we at 300,000,000 people have
a gun death rate of 140,000 people a year With 80,000,000 guns owned.
I can not do the math.
Our big problem is hand guns in an urban setting, stolen hand guns being used in crimes, and a USA drug policy which fills our prisons with people whose only offense is selling drugs to a market that is omnipresent, and whose business then necessitates protection by fire arms.
I have such respect for a country who has given up the death penalty, but permits no revolution with arms. Then there are the "colonies" which grants the right to bear arms, but you can not use them for defense unless the state agrees it is in defense, but if you are selling drugs it isn't self defense. Now how does one over throw a dictatorial government, which permits neither guns nor votes? You call on the CIA or the KGB (which is now obsolete) How do women protect themselves from the predators, Fred and Rose West?
Or from lions and tigers and bears oh my, which you have only behind bars now-a-days.
But I digress.

Firstly, I think all the Police should be armed, like they are here in Spain. It is a deterrent, the crime rates are much lower here than in the UK. Secondly, only British people without any kind of criminal history should be allowed to have a gun.

Not routinely. Farmers, gamekeepers or others wih legitimate need for a firearm can get shotguns or hunting rifles already. Pistols, assault rifles, SMGs and all the other weapons available in the USA - no way! No civilian 'needs' an M16 or an AK47!

Why should it be only criminals who can have them?
"They should be banned."
They are already but that hasn't helped.
The question was about adults, not lowlifes and loons.
There was a time, some years ago now, that the various shooting disciplines were about the only sports where the GB could be guaranteed to get medals at the Olympics and other international competitions. The government confiscated most of the handguns from the responsible part of the population but did little to stop their criminal use.

I do believe that it is people who kill people and I know that will annoy many. But the other thing is why would you want one. If it is for hunting (more in the USA than UK unless you are in the money), or skeet shooting then I understand, self defence? That is a little more worrying as I also believe that violence breeds violence and I would worry that the whole thing would escalate.

Too many people don't think before they act and having access to a gun would just make the probable outcome worse. it is also a lot easier for innocent people to get hurt because of their range and also through accidental triggering.
Psychologically, I suspect that it is also easier to pull a trigger than stab someone because the power comes from the gun.
Enough people are killed by guns already.
