An oil pressure guage can help diagnose problems early on as long as you know how to read it and know the particular engine quirks. Most oil lights come on at about 3-6 lbs of pressure. at idle this isn't bad but at speed you have problems ranging from oil filter stopped up or low oil to rod coming apart.

A STAND ALONE MECHANICAL oil pressure gauge THAT IS TAPPED INTO A MAIN OIL SOURCE LIKE THE OIL FILTER MOUNT is a very good idea even if the vehicle already has a factory installed one as the factory ones are not very accurate or reliable. Companies like "Autometer" sell super reliable and accurate ones that come in either white face with black numbers or black face with white numbers and they also offer chrome housings in case you want to mount it out of the dashboard. You can find one at any speed shop or through "Summit Racing" www.summitracing.com or "Jegs" www.jegs.com.A even better idea used by itself or with a gauge is a oil pressure sensing engine kill switch. It shuts the motor off when oil pressure drops below a certain level preventing any damage to the engine due to running without oil pressure.Either Summit or Jegs will have one of them as well.

its not a waste of money that's for sure,it gives a more accurate reading on the actual amount of oil pressure the engine is holding,it has helped save a lot of engines ,a lot of time, but its worth installing one for,it may save the engine some day ,you can also get an alarm that goes on it to warn you if it gets low oil pressure, those are nice to have also, they work with the pressure gages, good luck with it.

In all my years of driving various vehicles, if it didn't have a oil pressure gage when I bought it installing one has ben a high priority and saved me from destroying several good motors. All it takes is a 'idiot light' malfunction or burned out bulb that you are not aware of and then you are stuck with the price of a rebuilt motor plus installation cost.

If you have a factory gauge in your car then yes it's a waste. If you have a warning light, get a gauge.

SS is partly right, but if you don't watch the gauges, like a " real " driver,by the time you notice the gauge is low minor damage could occur.

A more useful gauge to install is this "Miles per Gallon Gauge"

If it saves your engine sometime it's not a waste of money, by the time an idiot light warns you that there is something wrong a lot of damage could be already done.
