When you get the 'Computer low on memory' error you have a program that is using all the physical and swap memory.
Or you have a virus infection.
I would say it is a virus before all the sudden one of your progams is hogging all the memory.
Try this:
From 'Safe Mode' run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Then while still in safe mode run the defrag progam.

You are confused - low on memory means low on RAM while your itunes, pictures, etc. consume hard drive space unless you attempt to open a 1000 of files simultaneously. In that case, they are loaded into memory (RAM) and cause the error/Low Memory message. Somebody suggested running a defrag program but it will only re-organize files on hard drive which is not a bad thing because they will open faster, and some space can actually be recovered.
Next, open the Task Manager - right-click the menu bar at the bottom of the screen -> Task Manager tab and check what is running on your machine. Most items in the processes section are not descriptive which - I believe is done on purpose so that you don't know what kind of cr@p some apple or microsoft run in the background - but still look for items that consume considerable amounts of memory, and google them - see what they are. And finally, some junk like spywyare or virus may cause your problem.

It sounds like you mean hard drive space and not memory. Go to "start", "programs", "accessories", "system tools" and run "Disk cleanup" and then "Defragment". That should free up some space, but you may need to buy a bigger or second hard drive, depending on whether you have a desktop or laptop computer.

click my computer
right click on your hard drive "default drive is C:"
then click properties >disc cleanup > check all boxes and then click ok,
if you mean virtual memory
click ctrl +alt+ del
on windows task check applications
close all applications that you do not need,
check processes
try to close the processes that dont fall under windows/system
and finally try to restart your computer,
if all else fails i think you might have spyware or a virus eating up your memory,
run an antivirus scan.
