It really bothers me. Are people that illiterate?

i know exactly what you mean! there is obviously a difference between the two and they aren't said the same way. it also bugs me when people spell "a lot" as one word.

For the same reason they don't know the difference between:
your and you're, - their, they're and there, - brakes (automobile) and breaks and any number of other words.
They don't care that people see them as unintelligent individuals, but that's OK with me because it makes this high school graduate with one year of college and almost 60 years of life experience look like a genius!!!!!

Yes.

It is very sad, just like when you go to the store and the cashier can't figure out the change you are owed unless the register does it for them.

it is probably beause some people pronounce it the same so when confronted with what they mean, they give one definition for both words.......
