Can you get a good education there? Or is it not the best choice?

Definitely. It depends what you wanna go for too, though. SUNY Binghamton is very reputable, i hear its real good for engineering. SUNY Stony Brook is awesome, especially if youre looking to go into something medical or something in psychology. SUNY Cortland is great for Fitness Specialist degrees and is very well known for that. I have a few friends doing that right now. Im not really sure why they have such a bad reputation tagged to them. Theyre not as expensive and a lot of them are great schools. Although, I'd stay away from SUNY Oneonta, its more of a party school, but in a grimey way. "Stoneonta" is what people call it, and i know tons of people who get kicked out there on academic probation and stuff. Check out the SUNY schools, you cant go wrong with a good one.

All the schools in the SUNY system are quite good. Much original research in many fields is produced by SUNY faculty members and students too.
