Usually you press Del or F2 to get to BIOS. Shared graphics memory could be adjusted manually there. In some laptops there is no adjustment. Memory allocation may be automatic. If you only have 512mb RAM, 64mb may be shared but if you have 1Gb RAM, 128mb or more is shared.

As rider200 suggested, you SHOULD be able to disable on-board video car from bios - when your machine boots, watch for prompt like "Press Del to enter setup" but exact message may be different, and depends on the MB/bios manufacture. Once you enter bios, look through menus, the video setting should be somewhere in the "Integrated Peripherals" section. If you can't find it - some cheap machines like e-machine don't have it, you'll need to find the manual, and disable the video card through dip switches on the motherboard. If you don't have the manual, you still have and option of simply plugging an addition video card into the AGP or PCI slot but sometimes this may cause adverse affects like computer would not wake up or may occasionally freeze.

To get into the BIOS different computers use differtent keypresses, usually it displays on the screen when the computer starts, or go to the computer manufacture and search for the keystrokes.

Once you get into the BIOS you should be able to change the size of the maxmum shared memory the embeded video uses from your system memory.

Another thing you could do that would be better for your system because you are running programs that need more memory for video is up grade your system memory by a gig or more. This will make the computer faster and display your graphics properly.
