I am an experienced driver, driving over 15 yrs accident free. I have recently developed a fear for driving on the highways, over some bridges, in the middle lane, even the guard rails affect me. I need some advice. I still drive, just local streets. Whenever I am on the highway, I panic and step on my brakes, I feel as if I am going to lose control of the vehicle. I get an awful sensation when I see car lights coming fast behind me.

Yes I have it and I am taking medication which allows me to drive. I was in a bad accident once, I drive maybe twice a week, and only when I am feeling good, I have other problems that effect my driving also. You definitely need to get some help if you are going to be out on the road everyday. For me I stay in the slow lane as far over as I can get and that helps me, I also have a mouthpiece that I use sometimes along with sunglasses that help stop the glare, that sensation gets on your nerves after a while and will cause other problems. So See a doc ASAP

I'd say it's because driving is becoming more and more frightening as streets become busier and busier and the more you are aware of this, and afraid, the worse your fear becomes. Notice how slowly old people drive? This must be because people become more fearful as they age. I hate driving at night now whereas it never mattered to me about 5 years ago. I have friends who live on the other side of the city and I just don't visit them for similar reasons , I don't exactly panic or feel as though I will lose control, but I am more fearful than I used to be.

I am terrified to venture into new territory and in a lot of big city traffic. Nobody seems to understand my fear but my one cousin. It is horrible. I got a lot better when I had to commute an hour away to the capital city of my state to go to college everyday. I just sorta got used to the high volume of traffic/and highways. I love to travel but hate to drive.

Yes, it is perfectly logical too. If more people felt this way, we would all be safer.
