I work at a hotel, my boss opened a thank you card that was addressed to me @ the hotel. Does she have the right to open my mail? Does the general manager have the right to open mail that is addressed to another team member or member of management.

it was not personal mail, infact it was a thank you note from a high school, I went to for career day. She is making a big deal out of it because she says I did not tell her I was attending a career fair, well it was not about the hotel or the management company, it was about my my position and what I do.............I went on my day off and it is none of her business, but she is a butt head so she had something to say. Since she put me on the spot, I wanted to let her know that she invaded my privacy by opening it in the first place. She snapped off and said I can open any mail that comes here!!!

It is against the law to open mail that is not addressed to you. Besides that, it's woefully rude. People call this kind of thing invasion of privacy or snooping around. It's possible that your boss made an error here. That sometimes happens. It's never a good idea to have personal mail sent to your place of business.

Mail without a persons name, just the hotel name, can be opened by anyone. Mail with a persons name, regardless of it content, may ONLY be opened by that person.

Chapter VIII Offenses
69. Irregular opening of or tampering with mail

Any person who otherwise than in pursuance of his or her duty opens or tampers with or wilfully destroys, makes away with or secretes any mail or postal article or allows any mail or postal article to be opened or tampered with, destroyed, made away with or secreted is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding seven years or to both a fine and such imprisonment.

--------------------------
Note the first part, "...pursuance of his or her duty opens ..."

As your boss, she may have a right to open your mail and see your emails.

For example, the guards in prison routinely open and read all mail addressed to inmates, as that is part of their job duty and specification, with the exception of client to attorney mail.

No one has the right to open anybody else mail. And yes it is a federal offence because they are tampering with US mail.

that's tricky. if it was your house, then no. but she could in theory open mail addressed to you that was in care of the company. so if it specifically noted that you were only receiving it as per your work, she might be in her rights, though it was maybe unethical

it is a federal offense for anyone to open mail addressed to another person.....even family members, though few would prosecute......you just have to want to take it to that level.

Did it go through the postal system? If it did that is against the law.
