Outside "the Office," I mean?

Basically, you can steal someone else's present at a group gift exchange. I have never heard of such a thing in my life, and just wondered about it after watching a rerun.

Definitly.
It goes like this.....
everyone gets a gift then everyone puts it on the table. Everyone gets a number #1- however many people you have- whoever has number 1 picks first and unwraps. then #2 goes and unwraps a gift. If he/she doesn't like the gift, and prefers the gift already opened.... he/she can swap it for that one. And so on..... Usually #1 gets to go again at the end having the ultimate choice

We did this at a work "holiday" party once. It was really a lot of fun.

Everyone brought a wrapped present (I think the rule was no more than $5) and they were all on a table. People's names were drawn from a hat and when it was your turn you got to either pick a present from the pile OR take someone else's present. If you took someone else's they got to pick another one from the pile OR take someone elses (but you couldn't take back the one that got taken from you).

It was really very funny. There were about 30 - 40 people involved so it went on for quite a while. There was one thing that everyone wanted - it was a tiny dart board. Everyone kept stealing that and it would start a chain reaction of people taking gifts from other people. Since they were all pretty much silly things there were no hurt feelings.

Sure, we do it all the time. You can select a new gift or "steal" one from someone who got one earlier. That person then gets the same option - new or steal. It makes the exchange go on for quite some time which can be good or bad. Usually works best when people get gag gifts for everyone.

I doubt there is for christmas. Maybe for a different gifty occasion. Just like in the show, it seems to me it would make for a lot of angry people. Unless it was all gag gifts, not nice expensive ones.

Yep. I have done it before. Except we called it "white elephant," which was also mentioned on the show. The way we did it, everything was a joke gift, though. Like stuff you would find at "Spencers."
