I've been having a bad day at work and someone said it's because of this mercury being in retrograde thing. Sounds like a crock of sh*t to me, but if anyone can explain what the heck it means, I'd appreciate it.

It's an astrological term. It is used because Mercury appears to be orbiting backwards from our view here on Earth.
And they are incorrect as Mercury started going direct again today, which should help ease up communications. (Mercury was in retrograde since mid-October in the sign of Scorpio..it will reach full direct mid-November) Mercury is the planet of communications and swiftness.

Yeah, it's an expression from a real event. I heard about it on the radio. A retrograde is when something is spinning one way but it looks like it;s spinning the other .(wheels on a car, for instance.) I can;t really remember, but somehow that screws with the Earth and makes something bad go down. Sorry, I forgot exactly what that thing was.

It's when Mercury is appearing to move backward in its orbit as viewed against the fixed stars... but in that context, it means everything is going wrong.
