Hi Jenna. Sorry, but I could not get into this at all and found it all a bit depressing. This opening piece was far too drawn out and for me and lacked any direction until the last 3 paragraphs. It read as a descriptive piece rather than a story. It needed much, much more atmosphere and emotion, it needed to draw me into either the location or the emotion of the event. Read your story out loud or record it and listen to the spoken words and you will see what I mean. It should have been dramatic in a subdued way but it simply wasn't or it should have made the reader curious but it didn't, it should have been emotive (possibly highly emotive as far as Gabriella is concerned) but it wasn't. Take a good look at it and see where you can cut back or alter or condense. Hope this helps! All the best to you and your writing.
