Put some nail polish remover on a cotton ball in the bottom of a jar then put a piece of cardboard in on top of the cotton ball that will keep the fly from falling into the cotton and then put the fly in and put the top of the jar on. That should send it to never never land.

OK so you don't want to kill it. Just put the jar in the freezer for a short while to put it into suspended animation. Don't freeze it completely as that will kill it. Keep checking it to see if it has stopped moving or is slowing down.

Put the fly in a container and place it in the freezer for best results. The metabolism slows and the fly will be motionless until it warms up enough to begin moving. This is commonly used for the "reviving fly" magic trick. You will have to experiment with length of freezing time in relation to revival time though.

Get a Fly caught in the refrigerator and it's metabolism will slow down, but not kill it. Temp of about 35-40.
