actually it sounds normal.... i had an '86 mazda 626 that ran the RPM high at 60 or 65...... This is because it is a low horsepowered engine...... (4 Cylinder) Smaller engine = smaller transmission

It certainly sounds as if the automatic transmission is not rolling out of third gear into overdrive. Have you owned this car since it was new? Has it always shown 3,000 rpm on the tachometer @ 60 mph? What you're describing is equivilent to a normal car with 4:11 gears in the rear end in high gear (no overdrive) with a manual 4 speed transmission with fourth gear being dierct or 1-1 from the crankshaft to the input shaft of the pinion gear inside the rear end.
Your car is definately stuck in third gear or you bought a used hot rod where someone changed the ring and pinion gears. In my opinion that would be very doubtful.

It's just got low gears. As long as you can rev to the red line everything is okay (the engine is not being flooded) - you will save a lot of petrol having gearing like this when driving quite fast and have good power at low speed.

My 1995 Chevy 2500 has a 411 rear end and it only pushes 2400 RPMs at 70 mph. 3000 RPMs at 60 mph is high, sounds like something is slipping, or someone has installed aftermarket gears.

the way it's geared in your transaxle, it must have about 3.73 or 3.90 gears in it.
