It's not a requirement, the humble rhyme,
But still I will do it, most all of the time.
My mind works like that, I can't seem to quit.
It seems to make some folks just have a big fit.

Rhyming isn't a requirement, but poetry must flow and have natural rhythm, called meter. Much of what is called free verse is nothing more than a large run-on sentence with no punctuation, and a lot of carriage returns inserted in totally inappropriate places. And some is very good. I just wish a lot of writers knew the difference.

edit:
I have to say, I don't agree that E.E. Cummings is a poet, or great either. I haven't read everything he wrote, but what I have read is bad.

My poetry always rhymes but no it doesnt have to rhyme at all. Thats up to you. I enjoy reading both styles of poetry. As long as it paints a picture for the reader and it comes from the heart then its great poetry weather it rhymes or not. :)

Poems have to have rhythm, because poetry is as much about sound as about meaning, if not more. Rhyme is an easy way to give poetry a sense of rhythm. But it is not the only way. Look at Dylan Thomas, Langston Hughes, E.E. Cummings, and many more. All of them wrote poems without rhyme, but no one denies that they are poets, and great ones too.

Poetry, in my opinion, doesn't have to rhyme. A poem could be so devoid of structure or rhyme, but as long as it has its necessary literary elements, it could still be considered a poem. Plus, even without rhyme, it still has to have flow within the poem.

As for me, I sometimes use rhyme in my poem when I think it fits into the poem. But other than that, I mostly write free verse.

Poetry definitely doesn't have to rhyme. In fact, prefer when it doesn't. All of the poetry I write is free verse.

i do no longer think of i will ever discern this one out. "what's poetry?" is a complicated question. Does poetry % meter? no longer each little thing called "poetry" on the instant has a sustained meter. Does poetry % a shorter line length than a short tale? Then lots of works would be excluded. Can a music be poetry, or is it excluded considering it is sung, even although-- a protracted time in the past-- poetry became oftentimes spoken (and perchance sung) aloud? Does poetry % words? i think of it is the only one i will come to a decision on. i think of poetry desires words, yet i've got had human beings disagree with me. in case you're taking poetry training in college at present, you will oftentimes hear the choice of your opinion. lots of scholars declare that the poet isn't loose to precise herself until eventually she has broken loose from the detention center of rhyme and charm. This opinion is so common on the instant that it form of feels, satirically, narrow-minded. loose verse is meant to be freeing, yet i've got met many adherents who do no longer seem liberated adequate to contemplate all forms of poetry, and supply rhyme a raffle. i'm hoping i've got helped some.

Poetry doesn't have to rhyme. Each line just needs to have the right amount of syllables and have the right cadence. That's all. Either way is good.
