we had scarlett as a second choice for my first daughter, we decided on Lily as it was a family name and suited her more as she was blonde.

Is your scarlett dark haired? I think it suits dark haired girls better for some reason?

Cute name though!

I love Ruby and Riley! Ruby is so awesome and pretty (plus I absolutely love the song lol) and Riley is very masculine, despite it's popularity as a girl's name - I don't think it'll be like Leslie or anything; it won't be jumping sides anytime soon.

I really think they're best spelled as is lol. Anything else looks too informal and a sloppy; if a Rouxby and a Ruby were competing for a job, Ruby would probably get it (not that it's fair, that's just the first impression of the name). Plus, the roux in Rouxby reminds me of the roux you make when cooking butter and flour together to make a white sauce - which is a bit odd.

The only different spelling I like is for Riley - Reilly is equally as cool.

Hmmm ... Riley is a great name, and I like it better for a boy than a girl. Reilly also feels masculine, since it is a traditional surname.

But virtually every other variation on this list - Rilee, Rhylie and so on - looks very girlie girl to me.

Riley was the 101st most popular name given to boys in the US last year. (Check www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ for popularity stats.) It was the 55th most popular name for girls last year, and has been in the top 100 since 2002, steadily rising up the charts. Rylie was #317 for girls, but didn't chart for boys. I know a girl Rileigh, too, and have seen a lot of variations under consideration. In nearly every case, it was to make the name a little more feminine.

My point is that Riley is a gender neutral name, and that sticking with Riley or Reilly communicates that the name belongs to a boy.

If your son is confident, he might not care that his name looks a little chick-a-rific. (I know a guy Kelly who's tough as nails; also a little boy Avery who's a bit fragile and hates being teased about his name.) It's hard to tell, but I'd stick with Riley/Reilly.

Which is, all said, quite a nice name.

Rhylie, Rylie, Ryli,

or

Rhubie, Rubie, Rubi

(No Kaiser puns please!)

(Edit)... I like James too, but maybe with an i or ie instead of the y.

Rouxbie, Rouxbi.

(Edit2)... Ruby (or however it will be spelt!?) was in our top 2 names for our new baby girl, now 4 months. But we went for the other, Scarlett.

Scarlett Summer Secret!

(Bit like marmite, people either love it... or just say... oh)

Riley is a surname, Ruby is a gem, if you do not like the spellings then choose something else. What is it with all this Ry Lee, Ru bee? Is getting more like America with their really silly names like Kinesha, Duwayne, Jadea, Kyrone, et al, your baby has to grow up and live with this crap, stop this one upmanship and just name your kids by something normal for heavens sake. If the majority spent as much time being good parents as they do in choosing pathetic names we might make progress! I read one on here a couple of weeks ago asking name suggestions for a kid she was hoping to have in 3/4yrs time! The world truly has gone mad.
