As in for transporting or a contest??

For putting it in a box for transporting, I'd lay it on something like a thin towel or pillow case and wrap it so you have material at the top to lift it and place it carefully in the box then slowly slide the towel/pillowcase out. Or leave it right in for when you take the pumpkin back out..............

As for a contest, I'd preactice with another and see which survives better dropping it each way in the box.

If it is a contest I would go with bubble wrap. An alternative is to put it in a closed plastic bag and get a can of that Great Stuff foam sealant. Squirt the can full of foam into the carton around the plastic bag and let it harden for an hour at least. That would be great shock-proofing.. Cut it away to take out the pumpkin.

If it isn't cheating, how 'bout making the box waterproof, and filling it almost full with water, and then drop the pumpkin in. It'll splash a lot , but I think it would work.
