Some movie stars get 25-30 million for one movie. Movies are filmed in less than a year.
I'd say Tom Cruise is much more over payed than Manny Ramirez.
I take it you've never played organized ball.

Everyone in sports is way over paid. With few exception, prior to 35 years ago players didn't make that much, and the game was better. In the 50's and before, most players had to get regular jobs in the off season to support their families. Phil Rizzuto, the best defensive short stop to ever play baseball, had to work in a men's clothing store in the off season. But whose fault is it? You can't blame the players, who doesn't want to make as much as they can. You have to blame the owners, they are the ones that agreed to arbitration in the first place and they are the ones who are offering these ridiculous deals. But the biggest blame rests with us, the fans. We are the ones paying these salaries, by going to the games, paying $7 for a soda, $7 for a hot dog etc. If we didn't go to the games, the owners wouldn't have the money, and the players wouldn't get the ridiculous salaries. I say stay home and watch the games on TV.
As for movie stars, the biggest difference is they don't sign long term contracts. If you give a movie star $20 or $30 million, for a movie, and his movie tanks, he is not making that for his next movie. In baseball, you sign long term contracts, if after the first year you are the worst player to ever play, you will still make that same money every year until your contract is up. If you wanna pay those salaries, then do it the way it was done prior to 35 years ago. Every player, no matter who they were, got a 1 year contract and every manager got a 2 year contract.

They earn their pay for the physical work that they do. It is not easy being a baseball player. You have to have skills and lots of practice. You have to worrry about injury, too. You can only be one for a limited amount of time until your body starts to break down with age so payment should be great to live on past that because some players suffer career threatening injuries over time. I am sure you work hard at what you do. Most players now have switched to bubble gum and hopefully eventually chewing tobacco will go out the window.

We live in a capitalist society. Baseball players possess a skill that is in short supply, and that others are willing to pay to watch and support.
I'm sure that you work hard at Sears, but the players do more than the work you see on the field each night. They hit the gym, they run, and generally keep themselves in excellent condition. Baseball isn't physically demanding every day, but it's a grueling schedule.
Again, the pay comes down to demand and supply. With all due respect, I'm sure that Prince Fielder could fill in for your position much easier than you could for his. That's not a knock on what you do - the same is true for my job - but that's why players are so highly paid. Nobody wants to watch me sit at a desk, or watch a teacher teach, or watch a lawyer litigate. Many people, though, will pay a great deal for baseball. Given the revenues that they generate, they're not underpaid. They're simply paid the value supported by the market in which they perform.

How many people pay to watch you work at Sears? The Yankees drew 4 million people last year. If people stopped going to the games and paying $6 for a beer and 4.50 for a hot dog the players would be paid less. If you want to get paid more go get a better job.

no you don't...at NO point in your illustrious career have you done anything remotely as physical as these athletes do.
these guys have to work their butts off since they are 5-6 years old and IMPRESS high school coaches as well as College coaches/ Minor league managers and FINALLY Major League Managers ....
ANYONE can work at Sears...no offense...but every hourly job is dispensible..
you will leave that job and ANYONE can take your spot...
there are only roughly 1000 athletes that can adequately do that job...there are even fewer pitchers who can do THAT job...
sadly stated....a monkey can do any job that requires less than a college degree and maybe even to some extent GS and military jobs...as not EVERY military job is combative...
this is NOT a job that you can just get into...a degree will never qualify you to do this job...no PHD or MBA will get you this degree...
have you ever had 7 solid hits in a batting cage spitting out 90+ mph?? because 7 out of 20 is roughly hitting a .290 avg..which is the MLB norm...especially off of a machine rather than live pitching from an arm like Papelbon's..
I would venture to say you have NOT...do you have the physical ability to create a batswing of over 90mph to meet that ball?? i would venture to say NO...
do you have the physical ability to rob an HR from a 10 ft fence?? yeah I think not...especially not after running 20 feet prior to..
all of the weight training and running that is required in the off season?? over 200 games including spring training games and possible post season games?? what about late nights after rain postponings? what about short flight trips and no sleep or little sleep before your next game???
fatigue DEFINITELY plays into things as well...
are you saying that just ANYONE can do this???
there is a DEFINITE reason why they are paid this much...
they're worth it...if NOT...they're contracts are reevaluated prior to signing again as free agents...

I don't care what they hold or what do to make history THEY AND I MEAN ALL PROS BASEBALL FOOTBALL HOCKEY BASKETBALL ETC PLAYERS ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY THEY GET PAID!!!!!

But until twenty five thousand people show up at Sears paying ten bucks a piece to watch you work, one hundred or so times a year, you really shouldn't complain... :)

Oh, heck no. What about movie stars? What about rock stars and other music people? All actors do is furrow there brow and act sensitive. I can dance around the stage and sing better than Bob Dylan. Hear him lately? He make mucus, not music.
