You can't go wrong with either choice in San Diego. But with the recent fires, avoid the mountains.
My favorite beach to picnic is La Jolla Coves. Check for the low tide schedule to explore the beautiful tide pools too. For the traditional park picnic...anywhere on Balboa Park.
If it's cool, bring a nice fleece blanket to cuddle into, and some comfort foods to warm your tummy.

There are so many great places to picnic in San Diego. Any of the beaches would be great....make it an evening picnic and then enjoy a bonfire after dark. For bonfire info: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/san-diego-fireworks.html
I also love Presidio Park....its an often overlooked park with hills and private little areas. For more info visit: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/presidio-park.html

The San Diego Zoo
there are a number of places within this marvelous place to have a picnic --- in surroundings that are absolutely amazing !! And, you don't have to make a 'long haul' to some distance to do it !!

Sadly, it's a long time til summer comes round again, but in the summer one of the best places to picnic is Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista when they are doing musical theatre. Here's how it works. You buy a ticket for a lawn seat (on line, about $20 a seat) then show up for the show at about 6 pm. Bring a picnic dinner including wine if you like; lots of people bring little tables too. The theatre provides the folding chairs. It's lots of fun to eat your dinner, sip your wine, enjoy the lovely surroundings, and eventually professional theatre. We saw West Side Story and Little Shop of Horrors this summer and it was lots of fun. Sort of like the Hollywood Bowl only a lot closer, easier parking, less traffic and less money.

Silver Strand beach in Coronado. Great place to gather sand dollars, too. Bon fire pits and long stretches of beach where you feel pretty secluded, considering you're in San Diego. Good luck!
