It is mostly about the Vice President. Originally, the candidate with the second most ballots became Vice President. The 12th Amendment mandated that a candidate could only run for President or Vice President, not both.
This made voting by political parties more important as two candidates would be paired on the Presidential ballot. It also protected a President from having a Vice President that would be working against him.
