A yeast infection is when the yeast that is naturally in your vagina goes bananas and over reproduces. You get really itchy and may have some cottage cheese-looking discharge. Yes, boys and girls can trade it, but it's not something serious, it's just a fungal infection. If you can stand the itching you can go a long time without it doing you any harm, but the itching inside is wicked.
It's not an std. The yeast can start multiplying when you drink lots of soda and your body, overwhelmed with sugar, starts to dump it in your urine. Yeast love urine, so they grow.

Yeast is candida and it is a fungus, not a bacteria. It is normally present in small numbers and your vagina has natural defenses to keep it in check.
Lots of things can get your balance out of whack and give yeast a chance to grow and multiply. When this happens you get a thick, white discharge and may be itchy. There are moderate and severe yeast infections. Some women even get slightly yeasty at certain times of the month, then their bodies get back into balance and it goes away. (Hormones affect the vaginal balance.)
It's easily treated with over the counter creams. Yeast can pass back and forth between sexual partners, but since it's always around, that's not really a huge issue. It's a question of whether your vaginal balance is right to stay healthy even when yeast is around.

It is not an STD. Is is an overgrowth of the candidia aka yeast bacteria. We have good bacteria and bad bacteria in our body with the bad being yeast. Normally the good bacteria keeps the bad bacteria under control but if something upsets that balance you get a yeast infection. That could be athletes foot, jock itch, ring worm, vaginal yeast, thrush, c-diff or yeasty areas under your breasts or abdominal folds. All of those are yeast infections. Yeast tends to grow in warm moist places so hence you see yeast often in warm moist areas like your vagina or skin folds etc. Antifungal meds or creams clear them up. If you keep getting vaginal yeast infections and you are sexually active yes the male could be giving it back to you and he may not have symptoms.
