Interesting. Although the planet may be a "closed system," the universe is not. There is nothing holding us to the Earth. I personally think that the human race was made to leave this planet and explore our solar system and the universe at large. If we don't, I think we are doomed to expire in our own waste and detritus. We are on the brink of another "Age of Discovery." This is a wonderful time to be alive. Don't let the naysayers bring us down. Think positively. BTW, there is more sharing of technology than has ever happened before. A little competition is a good thing and China, Japan, India and the European Union should be welcomed into the spacefaring group of nations. We are beginning a new millennium. A millennium of discovery and accomplishment. At the end of the last millennium, Vikings were just opening up the seas to allow exploration of the New World. One thousand years later, we are opening space travel for exploration of our Solar System. And eventually other solar systems. Recently, Stephen Hawking said that we as a species must escape this planet and explore and settle other worlds. Not to do so would spell the end... of us and all our aspirations. So, here we go. Its going to be a wondrous ride. An unimaginable time.

It must be nice to live in Imaginationland. Say hello to Cartman and the rest of the guys.
Firstly, it is impossible to deplete the planet of every last resource because there will always be wind and water, two of the most abundant resources the world has.
Secondly, Competition, while it may seem wasteful to you, is one of the major influences on technological advancement. Competition forces us to push the envelope on development and brings about innovative solutions that would ordinarily not occur. I don't mean to suggest that cooperation has no advantages, but I think the force of competition breeds many more benifits.
Lastly, the idealistic nature of your utopian view of mankinds future is a bit pedestrian and I sincerely hope that you see the inherent conflict with your 'one world' philosophy and the benefits of diversity.

Keep dreaming, kid, and you'll never accomplish anything. Reality is made of action.
About the "depletion of every last resource,"--it can't happen. We always find new means to our ends, old and new. If you told the creator of the first computer that computers would be small enough to hold in your hand and made of "chips" that are made of "sand", he would have thrown you out the door as a dangerous kook.

I will offer 1 kidney to share among a few of us. We might want to fry it in some used oil though.

When our planet is dead and depleted of every last resource, we too will be dead and depleted, it is after all a closed system!
