What about the Reagan era made liberals convert to conservatism?

The real neoconservatives are the members of PNAC, a foreign policy think tank. They really are not concerned with domestic politics. Their goal is to influence our govts'. foreign policy.

They support regime change in any country that is substantially different than the U.S., through military force if needed. Most of their members are Jewish and are also members of AIPAC, the Israeli political lobbyig group. Their policies are always favorable toward Israel, causing many to believe that their true concern is with the security of Israel.

During the 1990s, they developed a list of countries to be targeted for regime change. The list includes:
Iraq
Iran
Syria
Lebanon
Libya
Egypt
Saudi Arabia

Notice that the list exclusively targets nations in close proximity to Israel with Israel's perceived "most dangerous enemies" heading the list. Also notice that the Bush Admin. seems to be targeting these countries for regime change in the same order.
It has now become customary for supporters of PNAC policies, whether knowingly or not, to be likewise labeled as neocons.

We were all suffering under Carter. I lost a very good business because of him.

Reagan showed up and made just a few promises and had one request of the American people.

"I will stop inflation"
"I will bring unemployment to a single digit"
"I will arm this country"

"Please help me restore dignity to this nation"

He got it all done because even Liberals got the message and saw the value in the American way of life.
It has happened several times since. The Clinton scam was rejected and George Bush was elected.
David Dinkins and Mario Cuomo turned NY state and NYC into a den of criminals and even the liberals saw the need for Pataki and Giuliani to clean up the mess.

I'm afraid we may not find a savior after four years of Hillary. We will be faced with a new breed of liberals, most of them foreigners and the UN. It will be overwhelming.

They didn't convert to conservatism, they sort of converted conservatism to fit their beliefs. Conservatism used to be a desire for the minimum of government interference, smaller government, less taxes and far less spending, fiscal responsibility, and maximum individual freedom. They had strong moral views as well and disliked spending tax money to support anything that differed from those views such as abortion (just to name one). Liberal ideals were for larger government, more spending, more taxation to cover more spending and much more government oversight and regulation.
The liberals who became neocons (new conservatives) adopted conservative moral stances with liberal spending stances and conservative taxation. They want huge government and don't flinch from the stance of nation building or imperialism. They want low taxes and generally seem to ignore fiscal responsibility completely (balancing the budget)
The old conservatives were closer to the libertarians of today. The new conservatives are something completely different.

Added: I need to add here the old liberal moral stance is what got them in trouble. They wanted to accept every lifestyle imaginable as free expression and tended to champion the perverse. They were so afraid of being called prejudice that sometimes attacked what we usually consider moral.

NeoCons moved to the Republican party in the 60s and 70s when the Democrats changed to anti-war / pro-civil rights platforms.

You are referring to Reagan Democrats. That is different than NeoCon.

As you get older 50's etc you become more conservative. So the majority weren't really converted, you just become more conservative with age.

Yes.
I was a Communist Democrat and Hated America.
Reagan showed me how wrong I was.
And Jimmy Carter helped too.
(Carter and the Commie Democrats helped turn me around, by almost starving my family.)

They saw the light. Conservativism works. Everyone in the US became better off when the economy started to grow.
