My favorite genre is progressive rock, but it was not Pink Floyd that got me into prog. (Gasp!) I actually listened to Floyd before I got into prog, but saw Floyd was my intro to classic rock, it was actually Porcupine Tree that really got me into Prog. After falling in love with PT, I started listening to Rush ang King Crimson because they were under similar artists, and then I started getting into the big prog bands.

So, what band/artist introduced you to you favorite genre (and what genre is it)?

For me, funny enough, it was The Monkees (watching old reruns after school) that got me into rock, I think.

Then one day I heard 'Sgt. Pepper's'.....

But kinda the same boat as you- buddy formally introduced me to both Yes & Rush at the same time & life hasn't been the same since! :)

Blink 182.
Lame, I know.
I was at a CD store when I was 11/12 and heard a 'hot' guy tell his friend that Blink 182 'f-ing rocks, dude' so I went over and picked out Cheshire Cat, because I thought the kitty on the cover was cute, and that's what started it all for me.
Seriously. Going to a school where all the girls were crazy about N'Sync and Backstreet Boys ('omg Justin Timberlake and Nick Carter are soooo hot!!!'), and all the guys liked rap and hip hop (and break dancing)- I honestly didn't like any of that. I didn't understand why they liked that sh!t, and I wasn't liked very much because of the fact that I didn't like what everyone else liked (I liked 80's music, had a huge crush on Billy Idol and David Bowie, all thanks to my mom).
Listening to Cheshire Cat was amazing. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before. And they, are you ready for it? They CUSSED! *GASPS!*
At 11, I didn't think anyone was allowed to cuss in songs, so I was pretty shocked. I feared I'd get in trouble with my mom for listening to music with cuss words in it.
But anyway...
Blink 182 got me into punk.
Then I got into ska.
Then I went through a metal phase.
Then emo stuff (Texas Is The Reason, Sunny Day Real Estate were all considered 'emo' a while back; not My Chemical Romance)
While being a fan of emo, I got into hardcore (Poison the Well; Evergreen Terrace, etc)
Now I'm into...Well, I don't know. Indie, I guess.
But I would never have discovered any of the bands I've liked and like now if it wasn't for Blink 182.

Fetus- I envy you. While you had Screeching Weasel as a kid, I had not only 80's music, but LOTS of Air Supply.
LOTS is an understatement. My mom was obsessed with them.

Because I got into music before I was aware of any music labels (back then I think just the old farts had labels for the stuff), I'm not sure in which direction I went. I have been and always will be a fan of guitar-driven rock, period. Yeah, I cut my teeth on Beatles; Stones; Animals; and Paul Revere and the Raiders (the U.S. counterpart at the time), but it was those bands that made me trade in my Cornet for my first guitar. It's been guitar rock ever since. Give me a band that has good hooks, interesting melodies, and a dominant guitar; I'll listen.

Well, I started getting into classic rock after I started playing Guitar Hero 1. It was the band Disturbed that got me into rock and then Queen got me into classic rock. Now my favorite band is Boston. I also listen to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple. I also like some of the new stuff like Disturbed.

I think it must have been my dad's cassettes in the car that got me into Classic Rock :~

The Beatles
Jimi Hendrix
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac
Pink Floyd
and we always had the Classic Rock station on the radio.

Also, I remember at home that as soon as I had been taught how to use the record player, I would put on his LPs of the 'Double White' album, and 'Band on the Run' {and also my mum's LP of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'!}

I am a prog fan too, and my dad is a huge genesis fan, so I started listening to that and was intrigued. I also made the transition from Metallica to Dream Theater which got me into prog metal.

My favorite genre is (Shouldn't be a shock to You) Metal (Not like Death or anything) just Metal
And the band that introduced Me to Metal? Well I don't even like them anymore. That band was
Def Leppard, the song? Rock Of Ages
Now I find Leppards music to be way to seriously overproduced and poppy for My benefit.
A few weeks after I got into Leppard (Back in 83) I heard My first real Metal band...Judas Priest.

My favorite genre would be rock and all of its sub-genres. I don't think there was really 1 band in particular that got me into that type of music. It was more along the lines of me being influenced by many different bands that I truly respect as artists that made me get into rock.

COB got be into Power metal (more of a sub genre), Nirvana got me into 90s alternative, Pixies got me into regular Alt and Tool got me really into Prog. I don't really have a favorite Genre, putting music into little groups and sticking to those is a bit sad.

My Moms younger brother (my Uncle, whose only 8 years older than me) has a massive collection of 45's, and back in the late 1950's early 60's I remember him playing all this cool rockabilly and rock and roll stuff whenever we'd go over to Grandma's place to visit. One of my favorites was the Duane Eddy single, Rebel Rouser / Stalkin'. I liked it so much my Uncle gave it to me when I was around 10 years old. It was this 45 that got me into rock and roll. I played it over and over, and it drove my parents nuts.
I still have the 45 by the way!
