OK

The key is to get "like" denominators.

2 1/5 + 1 8/9 = 2 9/45 + 1 40/45
=3 49/45

4 4/45

===========

2 1/3 - 4 7/9 = 2 3/9 - 4 7/9 = 1 12/9 - 4 7/9

- 3 5/9

Hope that helps.

Split up the whole number and the fraction.

2+1=3

1/5+8/9 (find the LCD) which is 45.

9/45+40/45=49/45 now just divide 45 into 49 which is 1 4/45 now add that to the whole number 3+1 4/45= 4 4/45. Most teachers don't prefer this method, but it is much simpler.

21/5 + 18/9 = 189/45+ 90/45 = 270/45= 6

21/3 - 47/9 = 63/9 - 47/9 = 16/9
