Why not try the new LED lamp cluster bulbs that fit any GU10 type fitting ( a cluster of 20 led's in a bulb case the same shape as the halogen bulb). LED uses very little energy (around 2 wats per bulb) and does not get hot. The bulbs are quite expensive (£6 each for white light) but do last a very long time. As this is very new to the market the price is still quite high, but a little time will sort the price out.

They don't blow - they burn out. That is because most of them have about a 3000 hour life. If you keep the lamp on for four hours every night your average lamp will be burnt out in two years. If you get a cheaper one (promotional quality not commercial grade) it is good for only about 2000 hours so that is about a year of use. Save those kinds of lamps for places where bright very white illumination is needed.

Halogen lights are not advised except for specialist uses, e.g. shop lighting, because they are high-energy and get quite hot. In time they will be banned so you will be wasting your money.
