Most semi-pro they actually pay to play. They go out and hump their butts to get sponsors etc. semi-pro means semi pay to quote some song. If they get any it is usually just per diem like enough for food and board.
kimmy - no offense taken. The ones that "pay to play" get "paid" by the sponsors etc. That is where the pro gets in the title.. I have known some semi-pro footbal both male and female and they have to go get the sponsors, but things like insurance, uniforms are more out of their own pocket

I've coached semi-pro football for a while, and been involved with leagues all over the country in one way or another, and can tell you that most semi-pro players do not get paid at all. One of the reasons semi-pro football exists is to help young men get college scholorships, and if they got paid they would no longer be elgible for college ball. The way the rule actually reads they can't even play on a team where any player is paid or they lose their college elgibility.

RE:
Do ALL semi-pro football players get paid?
This guy that I am dating has been playing semi-pro football on a team in Va for 3 years now. He is 28 yo, lives at home with his mother and claims that he has no money to move out on his own. One of my girlfriends told me that she once met this guy who plays on a semi-pro football team and told...

Well, semi-pro means you get paid. If you don't get paid, you're an amateur. Of course it also means you don't get paid enough to live on, which is why it's semi-pro, not professional. Lots of guys get totally destroyed by the child support enforcement system. The amount of money they're required to pay depends partly on what they make, so for some guys, getting a good job doesn't seem to make sense. He does need to take care of things. Living with his mother doesn't have to mean he's a total loser, it might just be a good arrangement for them both. Are you sure he plays football? Have you been to a game? Some guys like to BS about stuff like that to impress us!
I'm not saying "guns" (the first answer) is wrong, they might call it semi-pro even though it really isn't. He should get a job, even if its part time working under the table.

By definition, to have "pro" in any part of the title, he gets paid. But there are extreme differences from league to league. Some leagues have players that get paid very well, some have players that get paid $50 per game.

In most leagues they are not paid at all, and in many they must pay to play, as guns said. Chances are the guy has no income at all, and his mother is paying for him to play football.
