Actually we lallygagged in WW2 and made a pile of money for our arms industry. We had no intention of saving France and if you really think so quit watching Hollywood's old war movies.
We went to war because we were almost at war with Japan and they bombed Pearl Harbor which scared the hell out of Americans who thought we'd been invaded. (Hawaii wasn't coerced into becoming a state until 1949) even though the attack by the Japanese was thousands of miles out in the mid Pacific.
We went into the War in Europe with fresh troops and new equipment at the time the Germans were beginning to be stretched too far on the fronts. The French had been quickly over run by the German machine as with the unprepared rest of Europe. Unlike some claim France did declare war on Germany and ran a famous underground which saved many crashed pilots ans crews and sabotaged many German facilities. Today the French resistance would be considered terrorist in nature much like the fighters against us in Iraq.
Without the massive help in the South Pacific we may have lost to Japan. We should be saying thanks to all the countries who helped us there. They sent help immediately even though they were having a difficult time producing war machines.
Believe me, our input into the European war was not altruistic in any way. It was self interest.
We didn't develop the atomic bomb. It was a consortium of scientists from all over the world working in secret far from the war. The US desert was a logical place.
Americans always brag about 'being the greatest' and, at the same time whine about being shafted.

Since it was French intervention which won the American revolutionary war back in 1789 and then the Founding Fathers reneged on paying France back the loan they gave us which is one big fat reason the French always snub the USA.
The new American republic started off as a deadbeat.

I may be incorrect, but the money they gave us was from back when they were a monarchy, and that was authorized by the king. Since he's dead and they did away with all of their monarchs, wouldn't that cancel it anyway? That and saving them from the Germans. Besides, I thought the money Louis gave us was a gift?

1963. We forgave the Marshall Plan debt. There was more to it than just the money, so don't jump to conclusions.
