While you're waiting they turn down the lights, turn on the disco ball, and everyone starts to do the electric slide... sometimes we end up in a totally different section by the end of the game. After the game, they pass out water for all the women who are bloating.

On a more serious note... if the home team is on defense then the crowd gets loud before the play so the offense has a tougher time audibling plays.

Yeah, they play music all the time at a football game here in the states. As far as going quiet before the snap, that depends on which team has the ball. The crowd is generally quiet when the home team is on offense and as loud as they can get when the visiting team is on offense. I'm just curious, who was saying there was too much noise for the UK game?

It is common courtesy for the stadium not to be playing anything before the snap, and during the play. While your team is on defense, you want to make a lot of noise to fluster the other team. Then when you are on offense, you want to be quiet to help the QB call audibles, and let the players hear the snap count. I think the British fans didn't cheer like normal fans, they just made noise for the heck of it.

I'm willing to bet the volume wasn't a problem. There are many games where you literally can't hear the person next to you, even if they scream. But like I said, there are very specific times when the crowd will cheer or make noise. Like a crucial 3rd and 10 play just outside of field goal range, while your team is on defense.
