Mental health services are provided by several different professions, each of which has its own training and areas of expertise. Finding the right professional(s) for you or a loved one can be a critical ingredient in the process of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery when faced with serious mental illness.

Types of Mental Health Professionals:

*Psychiatrist - a psychiatrist is a physician with a doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree or osteopathic (D.O.) degree, with at least four more years of specialized study and training in psychiatry. Psychiatrists are licensed as physicians to practice medicine by individual states. "Board certified" psychiatrists have passed the national examination administered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Psychiatrists provide medical and psychiatric evaluations, treat psychiatric disorders, provide psychotherapy, and prescribe and monitor medications.

The median expected salary for a typical Psychiatrist in the United States is $169,399

*Psychologist - some psychologists have a master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) in psychology while others have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) in clinical, educational, counseling, or research psychology. Most states license psychologists to practice psychology. They can provide psychological testing, evaluations, treat emotional and behavioral problems and mental disorders, and provide psychotherapy.

The median expected salary for a typical Psychologist in the United States is $76,515

*Therapists help people to learn or relearn skills, and some specialise in working with people with mental health problems. They can help with everyday activities such as planning a return to work, the use of free time and becoming more effective in performing daily tasks. OTs are part of community mental health teams.

The median expected salary for a typical Therapist in the United States is $63,000

A psychologist is a therapist with a degree in psychology.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, M.D. and has been to med school and can prescribe medication and physical therapy.
A therapist can be a social worker, or just a licensed therapist who may work in a school setting or even see clients for talk therapy.

For longer term intensive therapy you would want to see a psychologist. Most psychologists have to be mentored under the supervision of another psychologist. They have more training and ostensibly, more experience with complex problems and treatments such as pscyho-analysis.

For depression or manic-depression you would need to see a psychiatrist. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe medications or other medical therapies. Seeing a psychologist can also help but it is important to get a qualified diagnosis and treatment from a doctor.

You might see a therapist for family counseling, marriage counseling. A licensed therapist can see the same clients that a psychologist can see but often don't have a degree in psychology and are not mentored in the process of dealing with clients and their problems.

Therapist: $40k - 60k
Psychologist: $60k-150k (in a large city)
Psychiatrist: $200k and up. (again, in a large urban area, in more rural areas the annual income would be significantly less)

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with training in how to handle mental issues. A psychologist has no medical training, but studies how deal with mental issues as well. A key difference is that in addition to performing therapy, a psychiatrist can prescribe drugs (antidepressants, etc.), whereas a psychologist cannot (s/he may recommend that your doctor prescribe certain medications, though). A therapist is a general term that describes anyone performing therapy, including psychiatrists and psychologists, but often extended to social workers and others.

Psychiatrists generally make more since they are doctors, but the medical school process is longer and more expensive. I don't know how much, but you could check the job sites. It also depends if you work in private practice (where you have to get clients) or in some other setting (school, etc.)

Good luck!

>>>Psychologists can be paid very different salaries and rates. Some of the best therapists charge their clients hundreds of dollars per hour. Counselors at clinics and non-profit organizations might make minimum wage. The best income in the field goes to psychiatrists, who have an MD.
Some psychologists work for the state in administrative positions, evaluating people at prisons and mental health facilities. Others may work at state employment service or other state facilities that need psychologists. The specific dollar numbers vary from state to state. Some psychologists work for private industry and some are self employed. The pay scale varies greatly, partially depending on the opportunities that came to the psychologist and partly depending on the skill of the psychologist. Some psychologists who work in a private office can make a very good living, but like most professions, only the best will be able to make the top dollars. If you aren't very good you won't get many customers in a private practice situation. If you ARE very good, you can set your own price and you'll still get people pounding on your door to give you money.
The median salary for a psychologist in Denver, Co for example is $78, 668 per year. Try www.monster.com and you can refine your search to any city in the US. The career section allows you to search for this data and its free.
The range can vary from $20,000 a year to $100,000 a year, depending on what and where they practice. Check out salary.com or the occupational outlook handbook online for all kinds of salaries.
>>>In pyschiatry they earn up to about $163,144. Due to the fact that psychiatrists are doctoral level professionals you would or should be expecting to make up to more than 100k.
Psychiatry is much different than psychology. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can prescribe medicine to his/her patients. Most psychiatrists no longer provide therapy but tend to treat mental disorders by prescribing and managing medication. A psychologist holds a PhD or a PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) and treats mental disorders using psychotherapy. The tend to make much less than a psychiatrist. Depending on where they work...(private practice, hospitals, schools) psychologist salaries range from 20,000 to well, well over 100,000. There is no real median.

>>>The middle half of all recreational therapists made between $25,520 and $42,130 a year in 2004. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $20,130. The highest-paid 10 percent made more than $51,800 a year.

A Psychiatrist is a Medical Doctor, with Medical training, that can prescribe drugs.
A Psychologist has a Doctorate, but is not a medical Doctor. They can be Research based (Ph.D.) or Clinical (Psy.D.). They cannot prescribe drugs, but have a wide variety of things they can do, within the scope of their practice.
A Therapist is the lowest of the 3. Probably has a Bachelors Degree. May or may not be independently licensed (depending on the state). Can do some limited testing and such, but is mainly limited to direct therapy.

I'm not really sure, but I think that it depends on their education. I always thought that a psychologist, for example, graduated from medical school, and could prescribe drugs. A psychiatrist did not study medicine, and can not prescribe drugs. A therapist or counselor probably has only a BS or an MS degree, not a PhD or An MD.
